Computer Vision Innovations for Safe Traffic (VISTA) is a project financed by IPA 2007 HR 16 I PO 001  Regional Competitiveness – Operational Programme 2007-2011 for Community Assistance under the IPA Regional Development Component in Croatia. Project implements a modern computer technology in order to improve traffic:

  • Surround view parking assistance;
  • Detection of road side vegetation;
  • Automatic headlight detection;
  • Lane departure and collision warning;
  • Traffic sign detection and recognition;
  • Lane detection and recognition.

Participant institutions of the project are Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (UNIZG-FER) as leading institution and Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences (UNIZG-FTTS) as partner institution on University in Zagreb. Personal that is employed on the project consists of 9 professors, 7 engineers and 1 project manager. Chief project manager is prof. dr. sc. Sven Lončarić on UNIZG-FER, while local project manager on UNIZG-FTTS is prof. dr. sc. Hrvoje Gold.

The overall objectives of the project are strengthening of technology transfer and commercialization capacities of partner HEIs, transfer of existing computer vision applications from HEIs to SMEs, and developing new traffic- and transportation-related computer vision applications with commercial potential in collaboration with SMEs in the automotive industry sector.

The overall objectives will be achieved through two specific objectives. The first specific objective is conducting R&D activities towards commercialization of specific innovative computer vision applications. Implementation of R&D activities requires purchase of research equipment and employment of R&D engineers, which will represent enhancement of the R&D capacity. R&D results on seven computer vision applications will enhance amount of intellectual property that will be available for commercialization.

The first prerequisite for the strengthening of technology transfer and commercialization capabilities of the partner HEIs is research excellence. Research excellence will be improved by realization of seven specific innovative computer vision applications.

Four R&D groups at partner HEIs have significant research experience and results in the area of computer vision innovations for safe traffic, but the transfer of these results towards the industry proved to be a difficult problem.
