Opening of Laboratory for data science in traffic and logistics

On October 11, 2019, the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences Day was celebrated on the Borongaj Science and Education Campus. On that occasion, the Laboratory for Data Science in Transport and Logistics, led by the Department of Intelligent Transportation Systems, was opened. The event was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, Ph.D. Davor Božinović, Chief of Police Nikola Milina, Dean of the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences prof. Tomislav Josip Mlinarić, Ph.D., Assistant Minister at the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Mario Madunić and Deputy Mayor of the City of Zagreb Asst. Olivera Majic, Ph.D.

The Laboratory for Data Science in Traffic and Logistics was opened in cooperation with Ericsson Nikola Tesla. The laboratory aims to carry out research and development processes in the field of transport and logistics and to carry out laboratory exercises for students from 7 courses at the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences (FTTS). In collaboration with researchers at the Department of Intelligent Transport Systems and developers at Ericsson Nikola Tesla, a prototype software solution called “Migration Pattern Analysis” was developed for the needs of the laboratory. The mentioned solution is based on anonymized monitoring of users mobile devices and enables the creation of origin-destination matrices, heat maps of user concentration, and graphical representation of user migration between individual or sets of regions. All users can filter by nationality, gender, and OS they use on their device, and data can be obtained during a particular day inside and outside the tourist season. The development of the software solution will be implemented in several phases over the next three years. The head of the laboratory at the FTTS level is Ph.D. Martin Gregurić, (Deputy Dijana Beganović, MEng), while Ph.D. Kresimir Vidovic is Project Manager for the Establishment and Development of Labs in Ericsson Nikola Tesla.
